Igbos and Yorubas tit-tat and cooporation!

Yorubas and Igbos Long ages of Tit-Tat and corporation! Right from independence there have been some levels of cooperation and mutual suspicion between the Igbos and the Yorubas. I said cooperation because Herbert Mercury worked well with Owelle Nnamdi Azikiwe and on the untimely and unfortunate death of Herbert Macaury, Owelle Azikiwe became the leader of NCNC. On the other hand, after the general election where non of the three parties from North Nigeria, Western Nigeria and Eastern Nigeria failed to win outright majority to form a government Chief Obafemi Awolowo wanted to form a coalition government with Owelle Azikiwe to form a government but I guess in the sprit of his I mean Owelle Azikiwe’s Pan-Africanisim he was pursuing with Kwema Nkuruma of Ghana viewed that too selfish; the two south parties forming a government to exclude the entire north rather opted to form government with the North. This, of course angered Chief Awolowo and later to a tit-tat reaction of cross carpeting of members of Owelle Azikiwe’s party to Chief Awolowo’s party painstakingly engineered by Chief Obafemi Awolowo! That settled at that later when some Northern reactionaries wanted to and toppled Major General Aguyi Ironsi’s government that snow balled into the declaration of state by Biafra and later to civil war Chief Obafemi Awolowo serving a sentence in Calaba allegedly reached agreement with Col Ojukwu that when released he would declare a Yoruba state. However, instead of declaring a Yoruba state he took a ministerial appointment with Gowon’s government and was instrumental in using hunger to force the igbos to early surrender and scuttling of the Biafran state as well as Biafran land, Bakasi ceded to Cameron to help Nigeria block Igbos from getting any food through Nigeria Cameroon border. Today that Bakasi is history as gen. Obasonjo who rarely complied with court decisions in Nigeria speedily complied with judgment of the international court in Hague handed the Bakasi home land to the Cameroonian authorities. However, when same General Olusegun Obasonjo was released after Abacha’s death to become Nigeria President his Yoruba kinsmen rejected him however the Igbos and south south ensured that Gen Obasonjo regains power and supported him for his two terms in office. On the other hand Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu supported President Jonathan to win his first term in office. However, same Tinubu was the man that also ensured that President Jonathan did not get a second term like his kinsman Gen Obasonjo by spinning Gen Muhamadu Buhari from the north supported by the same Gen Olusegun Obasonjo the Igbos and south South supported to do his complete two terms! What a relationship! If it stopped at that it can be swallowed but the Oba of Lagos went a step further despite pushing out President Jonathan out of office to issue threats of death to Igbos who have a choice to vote not between an Igbo and a Yoruba but rather two Yorubas that they must vote for a candidate supported by his kinsman Sen. Bola Tinubu! One wonders what the Oba would then threaten the igboman with the day a political party decides to field an Igbo man as governorship candidate for Alausa mansion!? To close the story for now on cooperation side; despite Sen. Bola Tinubu’s effort two Yoruba states Ondo and Ekiti at least reasonably supported President Jonathan and even the base of Sen. Tinubu, Lagos also reasonably supported President Jonathan! Let’s hope that we do more of corporation rather than tit-tat. God bless the South and God bless Nigeria
